Dogs, donkeys and geese compared honestly, including when a guardian animal is the wrong answer.

What A Guardian Actually Does

A livestock guardian is not an attack animal. It works by presence and deterrence โ€” patrolling, scent-marking, barking at boundaries, and being an unacceptable complication for a predator that has easier options nearby.

That distinction matters because it explains the failures. A guardian will not chase down a determined predator and win a fight. It makes your ground a worse bet than the neighbour's.

Livestock Guardian Dogs

Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, Maremma, Akbash and similar breeds are the serious option for large-predator pressure. Effective against coyotes, foxes, and โ€” with more than one dog โ€” larger threats.

What people are not told often enough:

They bark at night. A lot. That is the job. In a rural setting it is fine. Within earshot of neighbours it is a genuine conflict, and it is the most common reason these dogs get rehomed.

They are not pets and they are not obedience dogs. These breeds were selected for independent decision-making without human direction. Expecting reliable recall or biddable behaviour is expecting the opposite of what they were bred for.

They take one to two years to mature into the job. An adolescent guardian may chase, play with, or injure the stock it will later protect. That period needs supervision and patience.

They roam. Boundary-marking is instinctive and a guardian that decides its territory extends across the road is a serious problem. Fencing must be real.

They are expensive to keep. A hundred-pound dog eats accordingly, for a decade or more.

Donkeys

A single donkey โ€” specifically a jenny or a gelded jack, never an intact jack near young stock โ€” can be effective against canids. Donkeys have a genuine aversion to dogs and coyotes and will chase, strike and stomp.

Advantages: they eat forage rather than dog food, they live a long time, and they need no special training.

Limitations: they work against canids and not much else. They are useless against aerial predators and inconsistent against large cats or bears. Some donkeys simply do not care, and you cannot know in advance. They also require their own management โ€” hoof care, and a real risk of laminitis on rich pasture.

Geese

Geese are alarms, not defences. They are loud, territorial and notice everything, which makes them a genuinely useful early-warning system layered with other measures.

They will not stop a fox. They are also aggressive toward people, including children and visitors, and that is a real cost.

Llamas and Alpacas

A single gelded male llama can guard sheep and goats effectively against canids. Similar profile to a donkey: forage-fed, low-input, canid-specific. Two llamas together tend to bond with each other rather than the stock, which defeats the purpose.

When A Guardian Is The Wrong Answer

Be blunt about this. A guardian animal is the wrong call when:

Where We Are Honest

Guardians are a large, long-lived, second animal system you now have to manage โ€” with its own feed, health, containment and, for dogs, neighbour-relations costs. They are extremely effective in the right situation, and they are also the most over-recommended solution in homesteading, routinely suggested to people whose actual problem is a gap in the hardware cloth.

Exclusion first. Guardians when exclusion is not enough.

Common Questions

Will a farm dog do the job?

Herding and hunting breeds are not guardians and often see poultry as prey. It is a different instinct set entirely.

How many dogs do I need?

One can handle light coyote pressure on modest acreage. Serious predator pressure or large ground usually needs two or more, which is also how they handle threats that a single dog cannot.

Can a guardian dog live with chickens?

Yes, with proper introduction as a young dog and supervision through adolescence. Poultry is a harder assignment than sheep because birds trigger prey drive more strongly.

Do guardians work against bears or mountain lions?

They may deter, but they will not reliably stop either, and dogs are frequently injured or killed trying. Where those predators are present, secure housing at night matters more than any guardian.
