Cold Is Rarely The Problem

A healthy adult chicken in good feather handles temperatures well below freezing. She is wearing a down jacket she grew herself, she tucks her head under a wing, and she roosts shoulder to shoulder with the others. Cold-hardy breeds — Wyandottes, Orpingtons, Chanteclers, Plymouth Rocks — routinely overwinter in unheated coops in genuinely severe climates.

What actually harms birds in winter is moisture. A chicken exhales a surprising amount of water vapour, and droppings release more. In a sealed coop that vapour condenses on the coldest surfaces — including combs and wattles — and frostbite follows. The birds are not too cold. They are damp.

Ventilation Without Draught

The distinction that trips people up: ventilation is air leaving high, draught is air moving across the birds.

Vents belong above roost height, so warm moist air rises and exits without blowing across the flock. Vents at or below roosting level create the draught you are trying to avoid. In most coops the correct winter move is to leave the high vents fully open and close the low ones — the opposite of most people's instinct, which is to seal everything.

If your coop windows run with condensation in the morning, or the bedding is damp, or you smell ammonia when you open the door, you do not have enough ventilation. Ammonia is worth taking seriously in its own right: it damages the respiratory lining and opens the door to infection.

The Heat Lamp Problem

Heat lamps are the leading cause of coop fires, and coop fires generally take the whole flock. The bulbs are hot enough to ignite bedding and dust, the clamps fail, and birds knock them.

There is a second problem that gets less attention. A heated coop prevents birds from acclimating. If the power fails in a cold snap — which is exactly when power fails — the flock goes from artificially warm to genuinely severe conditions with no adaptation at all. That is far more dangerous than a cold coop the birds are already conditioned to.

If you genuinely need supplemental heat for very young, very old or ill birds, use a flat panel radiant heater or a heat pad rated for animals, mounted so nothing can fall against bedding.

Water Is The Actual Winter Chore

Chickens will not eat much snow and they need liquid water daily. A hen that stops drinking stops laying and then stops eating. In freezing climates this is the single biggest daily labour cost of winter.

Heated bases and heated founts work. So does the low-tech approach of two rubber bowls swapped morning and evening — rubber flexes, so ice pops out rather than cracking the container. Whatever you choose, the plan needs to survive the coldest week of your year, not the average one.

Frostbite

Large single combs and long wattles are the vulnerable parts, and roosters suffer more than hens. Signs are pale or grey tips first, then black. The mechanism is almost always moisture plus cold, which is why ventilation is the real prevention.

Do not rub a frostbitten comb — the tissue is fragile and rubbing causes more damage. Petroleum jelly as a preventative is widely recommended and the evidence for it is thin; keeping the air dry does far more.

Light and Laying

Laying is driven by day length. Below roughly fourteen hours of light, most hens slow or stop, and that is normal biology rather than a problem to be corrected. You can add artificial light on a timer to maintain production, and there is a genuine trade-off in doing so: it works, and it uses up the hen's finite follicle reserve faster. Many keepers deliberately let birds rest through winter. Both choices are defensible; pretending there is no trade-off is not.

If you do supplement, add light in the morning rather than the evening. Light that cuts out abruptly at night leaves birds off the roost in the dark.

Where We Are Honest

Most winter advice online is written for climates far milder than the ones it gets applied in, and most winter emergencies come down to three things: wet bedding, frozen water, and a fire risk somebody installed on purpose. Fix ventilation, solve water, and remove the heat lamp — that is the bulk of winterising, and it costs almost nothing.

Should I insulate the coop?

Insulation without ventilation makes moisture worse. If you insulate, increase venting at the same time.

Do chickens need a bigger coop in winter?

They need more space per bird if they are confined more of the day, and dry bedding matters more than floor area. Overcrowding in winter drives both ammonia and pecking.

Is it cruel to keep them unheated?

No, provided they are cold-hardy breeds in good feather, dry, out of draught, and with liquid water. A healthy flock in a dry coop handles hard winters routinely.

What about the deep litter method?

It works well in winter and generates a little warmth as it composts, but it depends on getting carbon and turning right. Done badly it is just wet bedding.
