What It Actually Is
Deep litter is composting in place. Instead of stripping the coop weekly, you build a bed of carbon-rich bedding, let droppings fall into it, add more carbon on top, and let a microbial population establish that breaks the manure down where it lies.
Done properly it produces less work, less smell than a stripped coop, a small amount of warmth in winter, and finished compost once or twice a year. Done improperly it is a damp ammonia box that damages your birds' airways.
The difference is not luck. It is carbon ratio, moisture, and turning.
Carbon Is The Whole Game
Chicken manure is high in nitrogen. Composting needs roughly twenty-five to thirty parts carbon to one part nitrogen. Your bedding is the carbon and there is never as much of it as people assume.
Good carbon: pine shavings, chopped straw, dry leaves, hemp bedding, wood chips. Leaves are free and excellent.
Avoid: cedar shavings, which contain aromatic compounds implicated in respiratory irritation; hay, which mats into an airless slab and holds water; sawdust, which is too fine and packs down.
Start at least four to six inches deep and build from there. Most failed deep litter is simply too shallow.
The Ammonia Test
Ammonia is the entire diagnostic and you already own the instrument.
Get down to bird height โ roughly a foot off the floor, where your birds actually breathe โ and inhale. If you can smell ammonia at that level, the system is failing right now. Not later. Ammonia damages the respiratory lining and opens the door to infection, and birds are exposed to it continuously because they live at floor level and you do not.
The fix is always the same: add dry carbon and turn.
Turning
The bedding needs air. Chickens will do a good deal of the work themselves if you give them a reason โ scatter scratch grain across the litter and they will turn the top several inches enthusiastically. Beyond that, a fork through it every week or two keeps compaction down.
Wet patches under waterers and directly beneath roosts are where it fails first. Roost droppings concentrate overnight and go anaerobic. Either scrape that strip regularly or fit a droppings board and add its contents to the outdoor compost pile.
Moisture
Aim for the same feel as good garden compost: damp like a wrung-out sponge, not wet, not dust-dry.
Too wet is by far the more common failure and it usually comes from a leaking waterer, a roof drip or poor ventilation rather than the birds. Too dry stalls the biology and produces dust, which is its own respiratory problem.
The Yearly Cycle
Build through autumn and winter, when the extra depth and slight composting warmth help most. Strip most of it out in spring, leaving a few inches behind as an established microbial starter, and put the removed material on the compost heap.
Do not put fresh deep litter straight onto food crops. It is not finished compost, and raw poultry manure carries pathogens including Salmonella. Compost it separately and give it months, or apply well in advance of planting rather than to growing food.
Where We Are Honest
Deep litter is frequently sold as the low-effort option and it is not quite that. It is less frequent effort in exchange for needing to be right about carbon and moisture. A keeper who cannot commit to adding bedding regularly and turning occasionally is better served by stripping a shallow coop weekly, which is more work but far harder to get wrong.
It also does not suit every coop. Dirt floors work best; sealed concrete works with attention; a small coop with heavy stocking density and poor ventilation will not manage it at all.

Common Questions
Can I use deep litter with ducks?
It is much harder. Ducks add far more water and their droppings are wetter, so the bed tends toward anaerobic. Possible with heavy carbon input and excellent drainage, but it is a different job.
How deep should it get?
Start at four to six inches, build to eight to twelve over a season. Depth is what gives the biology room to work.
Why does my coop smell of ammonia?
Too much nitrogen, too little carbon, too much moisture, or not enough air. Add dry bedding and turn it. If it recurs quickly, check ventilation and look for a water leak.
Does deep litter really warm the coop?
A little, at the floor. It is a modest bonus, not a heating system, and it is not a reason to reduce ventilation.
