The One Idea
Continuous grazing lets animals return to the same plant repeatedly. A grass plant regrows from stored root energy; grazed again before it has rebuilt those reserves, it regrows weaker, and the root system shrinks each time. Do that for a season and the pasture thins, weeds fill the gaps, and the soil holds less water.
Rotational grazing separates grazing from regrowth. Animals graze a small area briefly, then leave, and that ground gets a genuine rest before they return.
The rest period is the whole point. Everything else is logistics.
Rest, Not Rotation
Moving animals between two paddocks is not rotational grazing in any meaningful sense — the rest period is too short. What matters is whether the plant has fully recovered before it is bitten again.
That recovery time is not fixed. In spring flush it might be two to three weeks; in midsummer heat or a dry spell it may be six, eight or more. The trigger is plant recovery, not the calendar. Moving on a rigid weekly schedule during a drought will damage pasture faster than continuous grazing would.
The practical rule of thumb: take about half the available growth and leave the rest. Grazing hard into the base is what removes a plant's ability to regrow quickly.
Small Acreage Reality
On a few acres, the honest constraint is that you probably cannot support as many animals as you would like. Overstocking defeats rotation entirely — if every paddock is grazed too hard because there are too many animals for the land, subdividing changes nothing.
Stocking rates vary enormously by rainfall, soil and species, and any single number quoted online is wrong somewhere. Your local extension office can give you a regionally realistic figure, and that is worth more than any general guidance including this page.
The secondary benefit matters on small ground: rotation is one of the strongest parasite-control tools available, because larvae die off on rested pasture. Rest periods long enough for parasite control are often longer than those needed for plant recovery.
Making It Practical
Portable electric netting or polywire on step-in posts is what makes this workable at small scale. You are not building permanent paddocks; you are moving a temporary fence across a field.
Water is the real constraint. Animals need water in every paddock, and hauling it twice a day gets old fast. A hose line with quick-connect fittings and a portable trough is the usual answer, and planning water access will shape your paddock layout more than anything else.
Portable shade matters in summer, and stock will refuse to use a paddock without it in hot weather.
What Improves, And How Fast
Realistically, over a few seasons: deeper roots, better water infiltration, more soil organic matter, denser sward, fewer weeds, and better manure distribution — animals concentrated briefly spread manure evenly instead of loafing in the same corner.
Do not expect a transformed pasture in one year. Soil change is slow, and anyone promising a dramatic first-season turnaround is selling something.
Where We Are Honest
Rotational grazing is genuinely well-supported for pasture health, and some of the stronger claims made for it — particularly around carbon sequestration rates — are contested in the scientific literature and vary hugely with climate and soil.
It is also more daily labour, not less. Moving fence and water every day or two is a real commitment, and the systems that fail are usually the ones set up by someone who wanted the outcome without the chore. Start with three or four paddocks you will actually rotate rather than twelve you will not.

How many paddocks do I need?
Enough that the rest period suits your growth rate. Four is a workable start; more subdivisions give better control and more work.

Does this work for chickens?
Yes, with mobile coops or tractors, and it is very effective for parasite and manure management. The rest periods and impact are different from ruminants.
