The Ones That Matter

Four metals account for most genuine human harm.

Lead. The most important by a distance. There is no known safe blood lead level in children. Effects are neurodevelopmental and permanent. Main sources: paint in housing built before 1978, contaminated dust and soil, old plumbing and service lines, some imported cosmetics, spices, cookware and traditional remedies. Adults are exposed occupationally and through renovation, shooting ranges and reloading.

Mercury. Two forms behave differently. Methylmercury accumulates in large predatory fish and matters most in pregnancy and young children. Elemental mercury is an occupational and dental-amalgam question. Sources are largely dietary.

Arsenic. Inorganic arsenic in well water is a genuine and under-appreciated problem in parts of the US, and it also appears in rice and rice products. Chronic exposure raises cancer risk. See Well Water Testing.

Cadmium. Smoking is the dominant source. Also present in some foods grown on contaminated soil.

The Test That Misleads People

This deserves its own section because it is the single most common way people are told they have metal poisoning when they do not.

Provoked or challenge urine testing involves taking a chelating agent and then measuring metals in urine. The chelator's entire job is to pull metals into urine, so of course levels rise. The reference ranges used for comparison are typically for unprovoked samples, so a normal person is reliably made to look abnormal.

Professional toxicology bodies have criticised this practice. It generates positive results in healthy people and leads to unnecessary and sometimes dangerous chelation.

Hair mineral analysis has similar problems for diagnosing body burden — external contamination, shampoo, treatment and enormous inter-laboratory variability.

Unprovoked, from a reputable lab, interpreted against the right reference range.

What Chelation Actually Is

Medical chelation is a real, effective, and genuinely risky treatment. Agents include succimer (DMSA), edetate calcium disodium, dimercaprol and penicillamine. They are prescription drugs, given for confirmed significant poisoning, with monitoring.

The risks are not theoretical. Chelators are not selective — they strip essential minerals such as zinc, copper and iron alongside the target. Deaths have occurred from chelation, including from hypocalcaemia caused by the wrong EDTA formulation being given.

It is not preventive. Chelation is treatment for diagnosed poisoning at levels where the benefit outweighs the harm. It is not a wellness practice, and it is not something to do because a provoked urine test looked alarming.

Where Oral Binders Fit

Honestly: they are a different category, and the marketing blurs the line deliberately.

Oral binders — clays, zeolite, chlorella, charcoal — work in the gut. They can adsorb metals present in the intestinal lumen and interrupt enterohepatic recirculation of some compounds. What they do not do is circulate through your blood and extract metals from bone or brain, which is where lead and mercury actually accumulate.

A genuine caution specific to metals: natural clays are mined and some supplement products have been found by the FDA to contain elevated lead. Buying a product to reduce lead exposure and getting lead in the product is a documented failure mode. Buy only from suppliers who publish heavy-metal testing on their finished product. What Actually Reduces Your Body Burden

Unglamorous and far more effective than any supplement.

Find and remove the source. This is the whole game. Test your water — see Well Water Testing. If your home predates 1978, assume lead paint and do not dry-sand or use a heat gun on it. Use certified lead-safe practices for renovation. Run taps before drinking if you have old plumbing.

Diet. Adequate calcium, iron and zinc reduce lead absorption — deficiency increases it, which is part of why lead poisoning tracks poverty. Fibre and adequate protein support normal excretion.

Fish choices. Eat lower-mercury fish: salmon, sardines, anchovies, trout. Limit shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, especially in pregnancy.

Rice and arsenic. Rinse rice, cook in excess water and drain, and vary grains. Rice-based infant products deserve particular attention.

Stop smoking. The dominant cadmium source.

The Sensible Sequence

1. Identify plausible exposure — housing age, water source, occupation, diet, hobbies

2. Test appropriately and unprovoked, from a reputable laboratory

3. If levels are genuinely elevated, work with a clinician or poison-control centre. Chelation is a medical decision

4. Remove the source, which does more than anything else

5. Support normal excretion through adequate mineral status and fibre

6. Use binders as adjunct, from tested products, away from medication
