What It Is
Companion planting means growing species together for mutual benefit — pest confusion, physical support, nitrogen sharing or attracting beneficial insects. Some of it is well supported; a lot of what circulates is inherited without testing.

Quality varies enormously between suppliers and the difference shows up in results. Look for a supplier who states the botanical species name, the plant part used, the country of origin and a harvest or best-before date. Vague labelling — a common name and nothing else — usually indicates a commodity product blended from whatever was cheapest that season. Dried material should still carry colour and aroma; grey, dusty, odourless stock has lost most of what made it useful. Store in airtight glass away from light and heat, and replace dried material annually rather than keeping it until it runs out.
What the Evidence Actually Supports
Traditional use and clinical evidence are two different standards and it is worth knowing which one applies here. Long traditional use tells you a preparation has been broadly tolerated over generations; it does not establish that it works for a specific condition. Controlled trials tell you whether an effect exists beyond placebo, but many natural products have only small or short trials behind them. Where the evidence is thin that is not proof something fails — it usually means nobody funded the research, since unpatentable materials rarely attract study money. Treat strong claims from anyone selling the product with the scepticism they deserve.
Getting the Most From It
Consistency beats dose for almost everything on this site. Pick one change, apply it properly for four to six weeks, and judge it against something you actually measured rather than how you feel on a given morning. Changing several things at once means you learn nothing about which one worked. If a preparation has not produced any noticeable effect after a fair trial at a sensible amount, stop paying for it — that is useful information, not a failure.
